Set of 28 “BEARCLAWS” aluminum hex-head screws/studs for wading boots.ALUMINUM IS BETTER THAN STEEL OR CARBIDE.NOTE: Also available in 3/8″ non-self-tapping safety tips. ————– OK, so you want to add studs to your felt or rubber sole wading boots, or replace some studs that have fallen out or worn out. You look around, and are shocked to see that studs from all the name-brand fly fishing companies are insanely expensive: Orvis & Simms both charge $34.95 for a set of 20 studs, Patagonia charges $39, GripStuds are $47.98 for 20, JPS studs will set you back $50 from the UK, Chotas are $32, and the Simms G4Pro cleats are a whopping $68 for 20 (😮). Complete rip-off!So you think “Hey, I’ll just DIY and buy hex-head screws myself. That’s basically all studs are, anyway.” Great idea, except you can only find standard steel, zinc, or if you’re lucky case-hardened steel screws. BUT GET THIS: If you research the various fly fishing bulletins/websites/blogs, you’ll discover that ALUMINUM studs are better than steel (even hardened steel or carbide). Aluminum studs actually grip better than steel, precisely because they are softer; especially if you fish where there is a lot of smooth granite or slate. You ever wonder why all the wading boot bar systems are made from aluminum, not steel? That’s why. Lighter than steel, plus better grip. You think it’s just coincidence that the most expensive studs on the market (the $68 Simms G4Pros) are aluminum, not steel or carbide? Plus, aluminum studs don’t rust! You know where you’re in the most danger of slipping and falling? Not necessarily in the river, but on the polished granite at or near the shore! On polished granite (like you find all over out West), hardened steel or carbide studs are actually like walking on ice skates, and do not grip as good as aluminum. And aluminum studs grip just as good as steel or carbide in ‘normal’ situations (moss or algae-covered rocks, mud, sand, wood/logs, etc.). But here’s the thing: Aluminum hex screws are super hard to find! Home Depot doesn’t carry them. Nor does ACE Hardware, Lowe’s, or most other hardware stores. And all the screws on eBay are also steel, not aluminum. Well, here you go. These are my “go-to” and I’m never going back to steel or RIP-OFF studs from the name-brands. Aluminum studs have literally saved my life, and made it possible to fish & hike in locations that were impossible before. NOTE: Yes, they wear out quicker than carbide. But they still grip great even when rounded, and anyway, so what? I’ll trade safety and access for the cost of going through two sets of studs per season instead of one any day. ———— Note: Unfortunately our cost rose 20% this summer, so we reluctantly had to raise the price by $1.
