Original Narrative: CONVENT OF RHEINAU: Below the cataract, the Rhine flows on in various windings through a beautiful, and, in part, ferticle country. At first it takes a southerly direction, and then turns towards the west and north, and at length again towards the south; two narrow necks of land then stretch forth into the stream, whilst in the middle is an island. On one of these necks is the little town of Rheinau, belonging to Canton Zurich; on the island, whither a stone bridge conducts, is the old Benedictine abbey of the same name. The other neck is part of the Baden territory. The town (with 600 inhabitants only, and about 90 houses) owes its origin in all probability to the Romans. The foundation of the Benedictine cloister is placed as far back as the year 778, and in the cloisterchurch may be seen the marble tomb of the founder, an Allemannic prince, named Wolfhart. In 1708 the Emperor Joseph I., raised the abbots to the dignity of princes; the title, however, was never adopted. Several learned monks formerly had their abode here, who published some historical and diplomatic works; none was more distinguished than Father Moritz van der Meer, from Hohenbaum, who, at his death in 1795, left upwards of eighty treatises, mostly unpublished, on profane and ecclesiactical history.
