Rare Thorens Semi-automatic Single Claw Mechanism Lighter sold at Tiffany & Co. This auction is for an absolutely gorgeous green onyx table lighter with a single claw mechanism from Thorens. An identical piece could be found for sale at Tiffany & Co. in 1921 – placing it firmly in the Art Deco period. Unfortunately, the one here is not the variation that is stamped with the Tiffany & Co on the side of the mechanism – but it does have the Torens mark on multiple locations.The combination of onyx and brass with gold plating would have been considered very luxurious at the time and typical of the Art Deco style. This aesthetic appeal, combined with the Thorens brand reputation, makes it an attractive piece for collectors of vintage smoking accessories and Art Deco objects. The lighter is approximately 3 ¾” tall and 2” across the base. It weighs an impressive 375g or 12.2oz. The lighter/claw/mechanism works well with a surprising burst when you push the button and the wheel advances as it should. All parts of this beautiful lighter appear to move freely and click into place. There are the remnants of a wick inside it and in the section where the brass screw can be removed to add fuel, there is still the original cotton inside – the fuel is long dried up. We have not attempted to operate this as a functioning lighter as we are certain that whoever buys this will be much more skilled at that. Please verify the condition of the lighter in the many photos provided. There are some small chips around the edges of the lighter which is common amongst stone items that are over a century old. While the light colored horizontal rings on the onyx are natural, there is one fine vertical crack that extends about 1” from the top but does not go all the way through or affect the functionality. It’s impossible to tell but this could have been there since production and only become more apparent over time. The adhesive that originally held the brass lighter mechanism base to the stone base has since desiccated – offering a rare glimpse into the construction of this item.
