The Yak-15 and Yak-17 fighters were designed and mass-produced for these engines. The next step in the development of jet aircraft was the purchase of more powerful engines Nin-I and Derwent-V from England. On March 11, 1947, the Council of Ministers of the USSR issued a decree instructing several design bureaus to develop new types of aircraft for them. In particular, OKB-115 was charged with the creation of a front-line fighter with a Dervent-V engine (thrust 1625 kgf) and a straight wing. The Yak-23 was designed according to the previously developed scheme on the Yak-15/17. The aircraft used a wing with a laminated profile and slotted flaps of the TsAGI type. The armament, which consisted of two 23 mm NR-23K cannons, was placed at the bottom of the forward fuselage, under the engine. The Yak-23 was superior to the Yak-15/17 and Mig-9 fighters in service with the USSR aviation, but significantly outperformed the swept-wing fighters. But since it took time to fine-tune and test the MiG-15 and La-15, a decision was made on the serial production of the Yak-23. Initially, they tried to introduce the Yak-23 into production at the Novosibirsk plant number 153, but to no avail. In February 1949, the Yak-23 began to be mastered at the factory number 31 in Tbilisi, which had previously produced the Yak-17. But by the middle of the year, in connection with an attempt to launch the MiG-15 into series at this plant, the pace of development of the Yak-23 slowed down, and the first machines appeared only in October. In total, before the end of production in March 1951, 313 serial Yak-23s were produced. In the USSR, the Yak-23 was not widely used. In 1949-50, several aviation regiments of the North Caucasus and Volga military districts were armed with these fighters. Since July 1950, the export of the Yak-23 to the socialist countries of Eastern Europe began, and in the USSR, the Yak-23 began to be replaced in units with the MiG-15. By 1953, there were no fighters of this type left in the ranks, all of them were either written off or transferred to the allies in the socialist camp. The aircraft were delivered to Bulgaria, Poland, Romania and Czechoslovakia. At the end of 1953, one Yak-23 was secretly exported from Romania to the United States. After tests carried out at Wright-Patterson AFB by Captain Tom Collins, the fighter was returned to Romania. On September 21, 1957, Polish pilot Andrzej Abłamowicz set two world climb records on the Yak-23 with the civilian marking SP-GLK.
