Map of England facing p. 1, + 36 plates with portraits of Kings & Queens, scenes from history etc. Book block tight. Pages: Preface, iv-vi +1114pp +xxii Appendix (Progress of the Sciences) + 8pp Index. The index pages have a slight stain (see pictures), and I noted a few additional pages thus lightly stained.. There is neither musty odor nor any evidence of mold or existence damp environment. Text and plates are complete. Some minor very faint foxing. Page 57 has a 3.5 inch tear (no repair attempt). A few pencil annotations: ‘complete’ and a few numerals; interior pages are devoid of marking. There are no missing pages between the covers. The leather covers are in remarkably good shape with two notable apologies: The rear outer cover is missing a 6 1/2 inch strip of leather 3/4 inch wide at the top and narrowing to a point, and the bottom edge of the spine has some roughness with a small amount missing. A monumental work with original leather covers and fine illustrations.
